For golfers, the Machrie Golf Course at Laggan Bay is just a 10 minute car journey from the Islay Hotel. It is a fantastic links course, listed as 62nd in the Top 100 Links Courses of the World.
The Machrie takes it’s name from the Gaelic word ‘Machair‘ meaning ‘The Links‘, set as it is in the sand dunes. It was designed in 1891 by Willie Campbell and really is a traditional Scottish Links Golf Course that has become a ‘must play’ course for anyone who loves golf. Golfers will discover the ever-changing nature of the challenge offered by this acclaimed course, playing on some of the finest Links Turfs in Scotland.
The course will test all aspects of your game with additional challenges laid down by the strength and direction of the wind and the rough, which can be punishing in the summer. On the fairways, good iron players will be rewarded by magnificent and consistent lies. The greens will test your chopping and long putting ability.
The location of the Machrie allows for stunning views along the Big Strand, a 9 mile stretch of unspoilt beach, and has great views over Loch Indaal and the Oa Peninsula.
